Since the early 2000s note-taking practices have been a hot topic in the history of science. The bulk of this research has focused on the study of nature in the early modern period. The special issue of Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte / History of Science and Humanities builds on this scholarship but broadens the perspective in at least two fundamental ways: (1) by integrating the discussion of early modern and modern practices of excerpting and (2) by including the humanities, social sciences and arts in the analysis. Thus it brings two questions to the fore that have not been discussed extensively, namely the extent to which we are to consider excerpting an early modern scholarly practice and how excerpting practices and their material substrates in the sciences relate to those in other academic and artistic fields.
