Founder of modern archaeology and art history, pioneer of German Classicism, master of artistic description – Johann Joachim Winckelmann shaped European cultural history in an extraordinary way.

On the occasion of his 300th anniversary the Chair for Modern Written Culture and European Knowledge Transfer (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg) and the Klassik Stiftung Weimar created an exhibition that portrayed the immense power of Winckelmann’s fascinating life and his epochal oeuvre, in which antiquity and modernity meet.

Winckelmann commenced his studies in Halle. By the year 1800 he was remembered and revered as a classical scholar in Weimar. But with regard to his path in life and far-reaching influence, he is a European figure whose reputation extends far beyond the boundaries of art history and archaeology. Indeed, Winckelmann influenced fundamental issues of anthropology, ethnology and socio-political discourse.

The exhibition particularly took a closer look at the international orientation and fame of an author, who was one of the first German-speaking modern writers read with great attention during his lifetime throughout Europe. In addition an entire floor was dedicated to the impact of Winckelmann’s ideas, demonstrating the fundamental ambivalence of his aesthetic approaches as well as their significance for the work of subsequent artists and scholars. Here it became apparent how “antique” modernity is in many ways, and how “modern” antiquity can become over and over again.
