Edition of the Collected Writings of Johann Georg Sulzer

Both scientifically and institutionally, Johann Georg Sulzer (1720-1779) is a nexus in the intellectual history of the 18th century. As a member of the philosophical section of the Berlin Academy he is primarily known as the as the author of A General Theory of the Beautiful Arts (1771-1774; Allgemeine Theorie der Schönen Künste), a major contribution to the theory of art and aesthetics of the Enlightenment, which was read widely well into the 19th century. Alongside his work on art and art anthropology, Sulzer also authored pedagogical writings, travel reports, literary criticism,
literary works and scientific investigations (→further readings).

Main focus of the editorial project is the philologically authoritative presentation and in-depth annotation of Johann Georg Sulzer’s writings, which, in many cases, are edited anew here for the first time since the 18th century.  Sulzer played an important, yet hardly known, role in the network of correspondences by letter of the Enlightenment.  The editorial project comprises the first complete edition of the correspondence between Sulzer and Johann Jakob Bodmer, annotated and edited on the basis of the original manuscripts.

The presentation of Sulzer’s collected writings allows to reconstruct the development of his thought in a field spanning intellectual history, epistemology, psychology, aesthetics, philosophy and education.
